Want Abs? Check Your Diet First.

This is the time of year, almost like clockwork, that everyone asks me, “How many times per week I can train abs?” If you really want me to answer that, the answer is as many as you want. Just adjust intensity accordingly. But the underlying, real question is, “What can I do to SEE my abs?”

From surface to core, humans are..

  • Skin
  • Fat
  • Muscle
  • Bone

Which means, the answer here is going to lie in your diet. You have to reduce the layer before muscle. You have to make an adjustment to your diet to reduce body fat. Sure, you can train hard and build tissue around your abs to improve the size/definition, but at the end of the day, if there’s a layer of fat over them, you won’t be able to see them.

If you are someone concerned with how their midsection is going to look this summer, I would encourage you to check out your food journal.  Find the places where you could pull a few calories off. Choose leaner options, pass on eating until your next meal if there’s no good choices. Take an extra walk or two every day to help increase calorie burn.
